Having gone to boarding school myself some of these quotes really help explain some of my own mess. The Nick Duffell quote about the struggle to properly mature because the child who was not allowed to grow up organically gets "stranded on the inside" really nails it!

Devastatingly painful. Horrifyingly true. It is so very hard to discover, let alone to admit, that one’s self is actually made up of two selves. And it is so hard to be united as one.

In my own experience of boarding school, admittedly I was older at 11 years starting, there were many girls (yes, I was at an all girls convent boarding school in the South of England) who were distinguished by being motherless or were dyslexic or had parents with relationship problems. These separate factors added to the common themes of home sickness and displacement from home. There were many complex details about each pupil which were compounded by the challenges of making friends at that age with pupils from ‘different’ backgrounds..
